Some of the key items we need to often purchase
Nappies and wipes – all sizes. Last year we gave out over 28,000 nappies!
Pyjamas – we are always running out of PJs for toddlers and older children. Children, especially the under-5s, need plenty of pyjamas so they are a big need item.
Socks/undies – these need to be new, particularly undies. We never get enough!
Baby formula – at times families need emergency supplies so we need to have some on hand. And this is not so easy as sometimes children can only tolerate certain brands or types, and these special needs can be expensive.
Single sheets – because usually we can’t get enough. Families with several young children need lots of sheets, especially warm winter ones.
Doonas – we do not receive enough blankets to keep kids warm, and so we buy lots of single bed doonas in colder months.
Car seats – car restraints are so essential and so expensive for families in need. We do everything we can to keep donations of car seats coming in to match the high number of requests. But at times there are just not enough, and we need to buy seats to make up the difference.
Children’s hair shampoo/conditioner – small items but when you’re struggling small essentials can be out of reach.
Batteries for toys – lots and lots of toys use batteries and they often need replacing!
Special needs – many of the children we support have special needs or chronic illness. When case workers ask us for help with special items we do our best, but most times we need to buy what’s needed!
And we need to keep the lights on – we’re a 100% volunteer charity and we work extremely hard to keep our costs down. But we need storage and working space and we can’t have this without paying for rent and power, and of course insurance and other costs you can’t get around.
